Low-Income Passive House
Maine State Housing Authority has been searching for a new typology to house low-income individuals. They requested that this new typology be passive house approved, as well as designed around the parameters of universal design. My design takes both of these into account and also has a major focus on the outdoor green space for each unit. Each outdoor green space has an abundance of uses from a garden, a patio area, or even a play area for children. Aside from the green space, each unit has a high vaulted ceiling upon entry and then compresses as you move between the public area, to the private area, which consists of the bedroom, bathroom, and mechanical room.
Berwick Community Center
House of Hope Mission has gained enough fundraising support to build a new community center for their cause in Berwick Maine. House of Hope is currently located in the church adjacent to the site that would be used for the community center. Our design consists of an activity building, a quiet building, and a community space between. The activity building houses the basketball court and soccer field, and the quite building has homework help areas as well as offices that overlook the community space. The community space houses the reception booth and an open game room. This design will be a safe haven for troubled kids to get a meal after school and have a place to go to play around with other kids in the local area.
Writers Retreat
A non-profit institute has purchased almost 1000 acres of land west of Bangor Maine, with the intention of giving five grants every summer for writers who will travel to the retreat in order to spend six weeks on-site reading, writing, and reflecting. The institute is planning to build five remote studios on the property where each author can spend the day working. My design allows the writers to have their own private cabin for rest, but also keeps them connected to the group through the use of a large stair which accesses all the cabins. A tier is located at the top of the stair for collaboration and lunch sessions between the writers.
Office Building Redefined
Funding has been granted for a new multi-purpose office building to be built on 20 west 5th street in South Boston. The purpose of this office building is to showcase a steel element as well as redefine what the office building standard is. The standard right now is cubicles and no communication between employees. In my design, I get rid of that entirely. In my design, there is an open and collaboration concept where every office has a table for collaborating and sit/stand desks. Next, I added green spaces on all the roofs for outdoor gathering spaces. Lastly, I added a sunscreen over the south side of the building which regulates that amount of light throughout the year.
